The Second Edition of Darkest Night arrived, which both Ken and I backed on Kickstarter. Kudos to Victory Point Games on a great game.
First, I’m impressed with the content, though a bit daunting: 29 heroes to choose from with 13 power cards for each.
Second, you won’t win this game easily, as it throws new challenges at you every turn and then eventually starts kicking you in the teeth. On their turn, each hero draws an event that’s often bad. Sometimes you have a (small) chance to skip the bad effects. Then, you have to deal with the blight that populate the board to start the game. They also come out every turn.
Finally, the goal is easy. But the challenge is what strategy you’ll use to get there. To win, you must earn 10 clues to get the first Holy Relic. You must have the relic to defeat the Necromancer in combat or 3 Holy Relics in total to win.
For my old brain, I’ve not internalized all the rules, so I’ve created a simple one-page reference (front and back) for the game. While the game rules themselves aren’t too complicated, much of the rules are paragraphs. And I need bullets and steps.
